I absolutely love grapefruit cocktails. It's right up there with muddled cucumber and gin cocktails, which I will post a recipe for when our cucumbers are ready to harvest in June or July. Here's a very basic, but delicious recipe for a grapefruit cocktail.
I picked an Oro Blanco grapefruit from our tree. Any sweet grapefruit will do. I'd stay away from the bitter varieties because they do not mix well with the St. Germain.
Recipe:
Muddle two grapefruit wedges, then add ice.
Add 2 ounces of Gin or Vodka. (I think the cocktail tastes better with Gin, but I know some prefer Vodka.)
Splash of St. Germain.
Add a thin grapefruit slice for garnish.
Finish with tonic water made with cane sugar and stir. (We typically get the 365 Brand from Whole Foods. Trader Joe's carries Hansen's Tonic Water, which is made with cane sugar as well.)

* St. Germain is a French liqueur flavored with elderflowers. It's my secret weapon in most cocktails. It adds an earthy, floral flavor and mixes perfectly with most fruit. My only warning is that it can easily overpower the cocktail. A splash really is all that you need.
* You don't need to spend a fortune on Gin and Vodka. Just experiment until you find the type that's right for you. I really love small batch Gins, such as Hayman's Old Tom, Aviation, Broker's Gin, and Hendrick's Small Batch. Some of my favorite Vodkas are Death's Door, Crater Lake, Reyka, and Vodka Monopolowa.
Enjoy!
